Job Description

Provide comprehensive pediatric nursing care on the children’s ward, including assessments, care planning, medication administration, education, emergency response, and leadership, ensuring safety and quality in a full‑time role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Complete assessment and re‑assessment of pediatric patients to identify care needs
  • Develop written care plans based on changing needs, monitor and evaluate effectiveness of interventions
  • Contribute feedback during patient rounds with physicians and ensure availability of investigations, reports, and clinical updates
  • Administer medication safely, monitor patient response, and provide medication education to patients and families
  • Document all assessment data, investigation results, care provided, multidisciplinary discussions, and patient/family interactions accurately and timely
  • Perform pain assessment and initiate analgesia per protocol
  • Accurately administer all medication according to treatment orders and MMU guidelines
  • Identify patient and family education needs and implement appropriate teaching
  • Commence enteral, oral, and gastric feeds as prescribed, assess absorption and elimination, and provide feedback
  • Recognize pre‑arrest or arrest states, activate the Emergency Response Team, and participate in resuscitation
  • Ensure a safe environment through infection‑control practices, safety checks on incubators, IV pumps, oxygen sources, and cardiac monitors
  • Account for judicious and efficient use of resources, including timely billing of ward stock drugs and consumables
  • Care for equipment through proper cleaning, storage, inventory checks, and reporting of non‑functional items
  • Participate in unit‑based nursing education, quality‑improvement projects, audits, spot checks, and skill checks
  • Ensure code pink is practiced at all times
  • Assist in orientation of new nurses and mentor junior staff and students
  • Provide leadership for the team and manage the unit during a shift
  • Provide basic nursing care without supervision

Requirements

  • KRCHN/KRM/BScN from a recognized school of Nursing or University
  • Current licensure with the Nursing Council of Kenya
  • Certificate in Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in an acute care hospital
  • Demonstrated evidence‑based knowledge of current practices in Paediatrics nursing
  • BA/BSc/HND education (as indicated in the posting)
