Job Description

Lead technical and operational surveillance activities across Kenya and South Sudan, guiding epidemiology, laboratory monitoring, stakeholder coordination, and data dissemination for PATH’s infectious disease programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with day‑to‑day technical and operational aspects of projects in Kenya and South Sudan.
  • Support development, coordination, and implementation of surveillance activities, including epidemiological and laboratory surveillance and outbreak investigation.
  • Provide technical guidance to regional staff to keep activities on track.
  • Review and revise project and donor reports; draft publications and external communications.
  • Coordinate with ministries of health, district health staff, development partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Exercise sound judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria with minimal supervision.
  • Contribute to national guidelines and normative policies for animal and human disease surveillance.
  • Produce and disseminate high‑quality data and information, such as SitReps, bulletins, and health risk assessments.
  • Support internal learning and development of infectious disease surveillance activities within PATH.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in epidemiology, public health, veterinary medicine, or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant international experience applying epidemiological principles to design, implement, and manage surveillance systems.
  • Experience working on large USG‑funded projects or technical implementation.
  • English proficiency.
  • Willingness to travel within Kenya and South Sudan up to 25%.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Coordination of staff across multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience in One Health, zoonotic diseases, surveillance systems, and outbreak investigation/control in Kenya and South Sudan.
  • In‑depth knowledge of public‑health issues, epidemiological theory, surveillance techniques, systems, and procedures.
  • Ability to support cross‑country cooperation for health development in epidemiology, surveillance, and response.
  • Strong analytical skills; experience with DIHS2 use and tool development.
  • Relevant publications, presentations, reports, and manual/tool development.
  • Prior work in NGOs, government agencies, or private organizations; experience in animal health, zoonotic diseases, or multisectoral collaborations.
