Job Description

Lead academic coordination of the Medical Laboratory Sciences program, overseeing curriculum development, laboratory setup, staff management, student experience, accreditation, and resource planning at Amref International University in Nairobi.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide academic leadership in the subject area
  • Develop and set tuition, curriculum, assessment and academic strategy for the qualifications
  • Plan, equip and operationalise teaching laboratories
  • Develop learning outcomes, manuals, SOPs and ensure qualification coherence and standards
  • Manage inventory, procurement, calibration and maintenance of equipment
  • Ensure high‑quality student experience, maximise retention and progression
  • Lead enhancement of teaching and learning, including curriculum design and use of new technologies and social media
  • Oversee student practical training, assessments and clinical placement coordination
  • Approve modules and qualification specifications, considering external examiner/assessor/regulatory feedback
  • Monitor teaching performance against student satisfaction, retention, attainment and graduate employment targets
  • Monitor external environment and provide market intelligence for programme development
  • Represent the programme at directorate, university and external levels
  • Ensure compatibility of the qualification with external requirements and benchmarks
  • Conduct environmental analysis and contribute to market intelligence
  • Line‑manage staff in the programme and monitor progress against annual work plans
  • Consider credit transfer cases and student academic queries

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences
  • Valid licence from Kenya Medical Laboratory Technician & Technologist Board
  • Minimum three years of laboratory teaching or clinical laboratory experience
  • Ability to contribute to and monitor academic strategy development and curriculum planning
  • Strong understanding of diagnostic laboratory procedures and quality management systems
  • Demonstrable innovative use of technology for learning
  • Capacity for workload planning and resource allocation
  • Experience managing academic staff
  • Ability to engage in budget setting and monitoring

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in laboratory set‑up, accreditation process and programme development (preferred)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and adequate knowledge of ERP and Learning Management Systems (LMS)
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to serve as point of contact for students and staff
